Answering the question “Why did you leave your last job and are currently not working.”
Following my webinar last month, requests are coming in for support and I’m happy to respond in providing a response to the following question.
“Why did you leave your last job and are currently not working.”
Finding a career we really enjoy is important to all of us and sometimes juggling work, family and other responsibilities takes all of our time and effort. If you decide to quit a job to find more suitable work and have a gap in your employment, Recruiters will notice this gap and may question you about it. Honesty is the very best approach.
To respond to this question appropriately, you need to help the recruiter understand why you left your previous employment, which may be because were not able to do your best work or the commute was just too much for your young family. Whatever the reason, you must find a reason that is honest and understandable. It’s also important to let the Recruiter know that you have not been unproductive in your job search, whether you looked for new work right away or have upgraded your skills somehow.
If the time between jobs is getting lengthier than you expected, you can advise the Recruiter that you have taken longer to find work because you want to be sure the next role that you accept is the right fit for you and the employer.
If you know you are the right candidate for roles you have applied for unsuccessfully, reflect on the reason why this might be. Do you have a resume that stands out? Does your resume scream “I’m the one you are looking for” to the hiring manager? If you are not sure this is the case, please review my webinar to find out if your resume may be a roadblock for you.
