I have written a book that answers all the questions above. Since we only buy from those we trust, I'd like to share a bit about me and my journey here so you understand how the content has come about for this guide and why you can trust what I am sharing.
Hi, I'm Lotte Struwing, President of Lasting Solutions HR Consulting & Coaching, certified HR career practitioner, certified career and resume strategist and the 2018 CDI Career Innovator Award.
I love my career and have had changes and challenges along the way, much like many of us.
For 23 years, I had the honour and privilege of working with the Iconic brand Hallmark Cards. I was able to grow my career from a Payroll Clerk to an HR Director. That was when companies provided oodles of training, and I took every opportunity presented to me and created some along the way. As a single mother, I was always maintaining a balancing act between my family and my work.
As my role evolved, I reached the self-actualization stage in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs terms, where I was at the top of my game, loving every day, doing the work I loved, working with people that made me 'sing' but I was putting in extra-long hours.
Then it hit me almost overnight. There was suddenly nothing new for me to learn, and I wasn't the mother I wanted to be for my sons.
It was a devastating reality, and 'my home - at work' for so long was no longer. It all felt wrong. It was the first time in my career that I felt continuously low and, after much deliberation, decided to move on.
I knew the most important career that I had was raising my boys to be good men. I had one chance to raise them right.
What a frightening time. It was the first time my career felt unstable.
I moved to another company, and despite my best efforts, it didn't work at all. I knew I was headed for burnout, and that would benefit no one. I had never been unemployed since I started part-time work at 15.
I took some time off and creatively thought about how I could do this differently to be there for my boys, still have a vibrant career and continue to make a difference to people every day.
Finally, the pieces fell into place, and I took a leap of faith and started my own HR Consulting and Career Strategy Business, Lasting Solutions HR Consulting & Coaching.
Reflecting on early 2008, when I began my company (and we all know what was happening at that time), I wondered if the world was going to tip over ….and it did. Every day was terrifying for me as for most businesses, especially since I was starting. Failure was not an option for me. I had a family to feed, and as the sole breadwinner, it was going to work. I believed that having a successful business was the ultimate in personal accountability.
As the world went into a deep recession, it became my blessing in disguise.
I knew how companies worked, I knew HR, I knew how to craft a good resume, I knew how to help people interview well, I was a good coach, I knew how to run a business, and I knew the fear people felt when they lost their jobs, their income and much was at risk. I was living it with them.
From my HR days, I also knew the companies I used when we had to terminate employees. It took one networking meeting with one of them, and then very quickly, I had lots of clients with multiple outplacement firms in that dark time. Many people asked why on earth would I do that type of work. My simple answer was that when I saw people the day after the 'worst day of their lives' when they lost their job, I was there to help get them on their way again. I love helping others, so it was a gift for me too.
I worked with some major providers in the outplacement industry, they all had good programs, and they were all different. Still, I found with my HR, coaching, and business background that I could offer them so much more, so I created new offerings to supplement and help everyone.
Losing your job is incredibly stressful.
Being able to add compassion and caring when people needed it the most resulted in clients finding their path and moving forward positively, even in the tough economy.
With my Board of Advisors encouragement and accountability, I built my own Career Transition program and improved it often. It is recognized in my region as a Tier 1 program; we are the 'go-to' resource.
But just as importantly, adding career transition services to my business has provided me with a more stable income and has provided the flexibility I needed to put my sons first.
Whether a company is terminating one person or closing an entire facility, there will always be change, and there will always be a need for career transition services.
Over the years of working with many career professionals, I have been asked how to get corporate clients or they have clients but do not have a program. I always enjoy the conversations and have been able to help. These conversations got me thinking that I felt compelled to share it even though I take my knowledge for granted. The thoughts lingered and were persistent and with being so busy, and I kept putting them in the background.
